What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula as a professional support person trained in the needs of the family in the days, weeks and months after birth or the addition of a new baby. The doula offers non-judgmental support, guidance, evidence based education and practical hands-on support immediately after birth through the first year.


Within those first crucial days of life up to the first year, Dear Doula provides postpartum support for the birthing individual, baby and the family.

Tasks of a Postpartum Doula: 

  • Emotional support/reassurance on parenting 

  • Nurture postpartum individual

  • Empowering and encouraging partner to be included with care

  • Assessing the needs of the whole family

  • Providing recommendations and referrals, if requested 

  • Emotional support of the individuals parenting choices 

  • Encouragement and positive affirmations 

  • Newborn care hands-on education including: 

    • Newborn appearance 

    • Sleep habits

    • Feeding

    • Bathing

    • Dressing Baby

    • Sharing skills: babying soothing, swaddling, general care 

    • Typical warning signs & when to call the Doctor 

  • Breastfeeding Counseling: 

    • Advanced breastfeeding education 

    • Helping knowing what is normal or when you need specialized care 

    • Help with comfortable positions for birthing individual, partner and baby

    • Establishing healthy routines 

    • How to recognize a successful latch 

    • Tips on how to use your breast pump, Haakaa, Collection Cups 

    • Proper milk storage 

    • Preparation of bottles and washing/cleaning/sterilizing 

  • Cord and circumcision care, if needed

  • Establishing routine (with feedings, sleep, hygiene) 

  • Organizing the nursery & household areas with baby items 

  • Light house work (cleaning the bottles, disposing diapers, cleaning spoiled clothes/items) 

  • Sibling education and transition, if requested

  • Create shopping lists & help with meal preparation 

Dear Doula offers Postpartum Day & Night Time Support! 

Day Hours: 8am-6pm 

Night Hours: 7pm-7am

Minimum of 12/hours of care per package

*Packages vary depending on need for family*

$35/per hour/daytime ~ $40/per hour/nighttime
